Palamós Hospital digitalizes data management in its operating rooms with Better Care

Barcelona, July 28, 2025 – As part of its commitment to the digitalization of its activity and the continuous improvement of healthcare quality, last June Palamós Hospital launched the technological solution BC Tracker® by Better Care in its five operating rooms and eight recovery beds, which are also connected. This allows monitoring both in the preoperative and postoperative phases, thereby improving patient follow-up and safety.
The goal is to automatically and systematically collect all data generated by patients not only during their time in the operating room but also before and after any intervention.

In addition, thanks to BC Tracker®, healthcare professionals have access to a complete and precise visualization of the patient’s health status, preventing human errors that may arise from manually recording vital signs provided by medical devices. In this regard, the solution helps optimize medical care, prevent complications, and ensure successful recovery, thus increasing patient safety.

Since its activation on June 16, all operating rooms at Palamós Hospital have been working with this technological tool. More than 400 patients have already undergone surgery using the system, and the figure is expected to reach 6,000 by the end of the year.

From the “green sheet” and manual records to the digital operating room
Another remarkable aspect of the project is the digitalization of the “anesthesia sheet,” a paper document where key clinical data such as vital signs, medication administration, and operating times are manually recorded. This sheet is part of the clinical documentation and contains essential information for patient care follow-up.

In a manual record, the healthcare professional must review and write down the readings from the operating room monitors every 15 minutes on the anesthesia sheet, which could lead to critical information about the patient’s health being missed. Now, however, all this data is automatically saved and displayed in BC Tracker®. Furthermore, it is integrated into the patient’s electronic medical record, reducing paper use, lowering the administrative workload for healthcare staff, and making it easier to access patient information from any postoperative unit.

“This project represents a turning point for our daily clinical practice,” says Jose Manuel Marqueta Sánchez, Director of Surgical Specialties. “The automation and standardization of certain perioperative processes, as well as access to a single view of the patient’s information, guarantee that we can work in an environment that is safer for the patient and more efficient for healthcare professionals.” In addition, with the help of BC Tracker®, Palamós Hospital operating rooms have also been able to digitalize the counting sheet, which is used to accurately control the material used during surgery. Its main function is to ensure that items such as gauze, sponges, or other surgical instruments are accounted for after the procedure.

The system provides an initial overview with a bed map that shows patients in each stage of the surgical process: preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative. By accessing each patient’s record, vital signs collected automatically from medical devices such as monitors, ventilators, and BIS can be visualized. Key intervention data are also recorded here, such as entry into the operating room, anesthesia administration, surgery completion, possible complications, and all medications used during the procedure and required in the postoperative phase.
