• The European Intellilung project aims to provide a decision support system using advanced AI algorithms to analyze data from mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal lung support, and other sources.

• The Spanish company, a participant in the project, has connected and integrated medical devices from different hospitals and developed the clinical viewer that allows medical staff to visualize and validate the algorithm’s recommendations.

May 2025.– The European project IntelliLung, which applies artificial intelligence to improve the treatment of critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation, has successfully completed its first implementation phase. The program aims to provide a decision support system using advanced AI algorithms to analyze data from mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal lung support, and other sources. These data are securely transferred, enabling healthcare professionals to monitor patient conditions and quickly respond to the system’s recommendations.

Continuous and comprehensive monitoring is essential in this field, as is the real-time understanding and interpretation of data generated by medical devices connected to the patient. For this reason, Better Care, a company specialized in the capture, management, and processing of clinical data, plays a key role by having connected and integrated medical devices from different hospitals and developing the clinical viewer that enables medical staff to visualize and validate the recommendations of the algorithm trained with real patient data.

According to Rudys Magrans, Head of Data Science at Better Care and project participant, “this viewer puts artificial intelligence at the service of clinical staff. Once validated, it could represent a new tool to act with precision at the most critical moments.”

Mechanical ventilation is one of the most commonly used therapies for critically ill patients with acute respiratory failure but, despite its benefits, incorrect application can seriously harm the patient. Furthermore, in the ICU, small asynchronies between the ventilator and the patient can hinder recovery. This is why the project, which has been ongoing since 2022, is so important: it allows these asynchronies to be detected and suggests how to act before they worsen.

Two Spanish hospitals participate in the project’s second phase

After completing the first part of the project, the second phase has begun, aiming to validate the algorithm with prospective data on patient–ventilator asynchronies in real time from four hospitals: Hospital Universitario La Princesa and Fundació Parc Taulí (Spain), Warsaw General Hospital (Poland), and Dresden University of Technology (Germany). The study will compare the algorithm’s performance with the current standard of care in more than 500 patients across these centers.

In addition, the algorithm will provide clinicians with medical recommendations on how to adjust patient–ventilator interaction to improve recovery.
